TAMPA, Fla. – SynDaver, an advanced biotechnology company specializing in the creation of synthetic humans and synthetic animals for medical testing and training, has developed a new oral health trainer for use in dental education institutions.
SynDaver’s new oral health trainer replicates the anatomy and feel of a live patient by incorporating realistic synthetic human tissue, respiratory airways, and a full oral structure. The training device was engineered to allow dental students to practice dental injection procedures and suturing techniques, without the risks associated presented by using cadavers.
The oral health trainer developed by SynDaver has already attracted industry attention, and will be used by dental students at the University of Newcastle in Australia this year.
“SynDaver’s oral health trainer was developed to fill the need for realistic hands-on training by students, at each stage in their education. These trainers provide realistic feedback to students not found in other training devices and mimic a live patient, without the dangers,” said Dr. Christopher Sakezles, founder of SynDaver. “We see an opportunity to tailor the unique tissues SynDaver has developed for other medical fields and provide better tools to dental programs worldwide.”
In August, Dr. Jose Arauz, DMD, a board-certified periodontist and a practice owner in Jacksonville, N.C., was in the Tampa Bay area for a training conference at the Pikos Institute, and visited SynDaver to learn more about the potential applications for SynDaver’s products in the dental industry.
“I was absolutely blown away by the realism,” said Arauz. “After seeing how the SynDavers are made, I practiced suturing on the synthetic material, and unlike a cadaver or an animal mouth that would be typically used in training, the SynDaver tissue responded identically to how living tissue does. I certainly see not only a need for this, but a significant advantage to using this for future training.”
The Tampa-based company is currently planning to create more elaborate dental models capable of supporting pathologies and X-Ray imaging. SynDaver’s next generation oral trainers could be used by students studying in specialized fields, like periodontics, endodontics and prosthodontics.
